Diets to Treat Yeast Infections

Vaginal yeast infection, also known as thrush, is a common problem in women. It is caused by an overgrowth of candida albicans which is a fungus which ordinarily lives in the vagina in a balanced number along with other healthy bacteria such as lactobacilli. When an overgrowth of candida occurs women experience symptoms such as itching, pain, swelling and a curdlike white discharge. Common causes for an overgrowth include taking antibiotics which kill the healthy bacteria and allow the fungus to grow unchecked, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, wearing tight fitting nylon clothing which cause a warm, humid environment which favours thrush and diabetes. Thrush is usually treated with intravaginal cream or pessaries/tablets, or it may be treated with antifungals by mouth, such as Diflucan, fluonazole, ketaconazole and similar agents. A minority of women have a problem with ongoing yeast infections in spite of treatment. These are best treated by aggressive and ongoing antifungals vaginally. Some women experience a flareup of thrush after intercourse. One way of treating this is to use an antifungal cream as a lubricant for sex, or instilling vaginal antifungals after sex.
